The development of wood working tools over the years has facilitated the availability of a very vast variety of furniture in all the possible designs and sizes to meet any requirement. Some of the smaller items, like a bookcase is available in so large a variety that it really adds to your confusion while you are out there trying to make up your mind on which piece to buy. You get a corner bookcase for any and every imaginable corner of your home, and each offer a practical utility of the available space.
Before you decide to go shopping online for a bookcase, or out in the market, you should know what exactly you are looking for or you make one for yourself to suit your specific requirements.
But, if you never built a piece of furniture all your life, you may feel it’s a crazy idea. Nonetheless, it’s not so difficult a project. If you know how to handle a hammer and can find your way out to a Home Depot or some such department store with a wood working section, you certainly can make a small corner bookcase of your own.
Building furniture is a bit time consuming. You have to go step-by-step for building a bookcase. First you have to carry some research and got to a couple of “HOW TO” sites. Some of the specialized websites give you step by step instructions on piecing together a bookcase from scratch.
Next, you have to go shopping for materials and tools. Keeping the instructions in mind, procure the materials needed for building your bookcase. Now get down to the real work of putting together all of the pieces. Treat it as a wooden puzzle and assemble together all the pieces. Now you are left with just the finishing part. Make use of sandpaper to even out the edges or corners till you get a smooth feeling on touching your creation. Finally you may just stain it or paint it so that it jells with other decor of the room you are going to keep it in.
That’s all, my friend, just a few simple steps, with a minor detail here or there, and you will have a perfect corner bookcase ready for your home. Once you’ve made a couple of them on your own, you’ll begin to enjoy making them and may diversify into making other pieces of furniture too. It may interest you to learn that an amateur woodworker started building bookcases and coffee tables out of his garage. And, now he sells that stuff on eBay for a good price. He makes it, posts it, ships it, and collects the money.
At present Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) offers two home energy saving programs that qualify the participating house owners to claim reimbursement of the total cost incurred by them for carrying out certain home energy improvements. One such classified improvement is the cavity wall insulation. This system of insulation offers a convenient structural design that supports wall insulation materials.
Cavity Walls
Cavity walls are external walls of a building. These have an air gap that might be housed within the structure of the wall itself (example- Hollow block walls) or between two solid walls (or between two partitions having a narrow air gap separating them). The houses that were constructed from1932 to 1982 widely used this technique.
For most of the houses constructed after 1982, it would be reasonable to conclude that its construction followed the technique of wall cavity, though it may or may not have incorporated an insulation in between.
Almost all houses constructed after 1982 adopted the cavity wall technique with or without the use of insulation.
Why do you need insulation in cavity wall?
An air gap is maintained by wall cavity that provides good means of insulation. Come to think of it, all the means adopted for using insulating materials necessarily involve the creation of air bubbles or air gaps to get the desired results. You should understand that heat flows from the warmer end to the colder end. If the cavity width between two walls goes beyond a specified critical limit, the air within the cavity gets forced to move around because of convection currents that are set up. As a consequence it starts assisting the transfer of heat from the warmer end to the colder end instead of jamming it.
A filling with porous insulating materials helps restrict t air movement within the cavity, thus providing an optimum level of insulation.
But how do you get to know that your house has cavity walls?
It’s almost certain that houses built over the last twenty-five yeas would have cavity walls. In all probability those have provided with insulation also. Likewise, houses constructed fifty years prior to that have a very good likelihood of being with cavity walls, though insulation might be missing.
The pattern of bricks on external walls is a sure tell-tale sign. The following three patterns are followed for lying of bricks.
* Stretcher bond
* Flemish bond
* And, English bond
Amongst these three, only the stretcher bond patterned brick walls will have a wall cavity. In a brick wall with stretcher bond pattern, the bricks are laid flat on their side and in a linear manner known as end to end lying.
Width of the total wall is another sure way of assessing the needful. Because of the built-in cavity, the width is more than the normal 300mm as you might have expected.
One shouldn’t hesitate to get professional advice on the subject as it is a skilled job and only an expert with proper tools and equipments can confirm and advice on the status of air gap and confirm if some insulating material has been used and thus the present state of the wall.
Types of insulation for cavity walls:
Here are the materials that are most often used for the purpose.
* Fiberglass or mineral wool in short strands
* Cellulose loose fill or stabilized cellulose
* Phenolic and other Synthetic foam cavity board – (Used in new constructions only).
The time taken for having cavity wall insulation for an existing house would take around four hours but calls for the services of an expert who has all the necessary special tools needed for the purpose. It requires drilling of holes in the existing external wall at predefined and determined distance. This is followed by the insertion of a special nozzle and then the blowing of small strands of insulating material in the wall cavity. For a new house under construction, one may use phenolic foam rigid board or expanded polystyrene foam boards.
A major part of any project connected with the modifications or remodeling of your basement is the insulation of its walls. Any remodeling project carried out in a logically sequential manner saves time, money and effort. And, getting the walls insulated should be handled before carrying another activity connected with the modifications of your basement. Depending on the size of your basement, it may turn out to be big project. It’s always better to educate yourself on the subject before venturing in to such projects.
You will find the following tips helpful if you are thinking on the lines of having an insulated basement.
1. If you intend having your basement insulated only to preserve heat during winters, then you should insulate its walls only. On the other hand if you want to avoid noise getting out of the basement, you have to provide insulation to ceiling as well. It is desirable to insulate the ceiling in case the basement is to be used as a family room or you intend having a home theater therein. You’ll notice all the basement bars have similar arrangements.
2. Before you start with the process of insulation, you must check if there already is any moisture or water content or water marks on the walls. If that be so, make sure to have them treated before fixing the insulation boards.
3. You need to seal all the band joists on the walls to prevent entrance of air thru wall joints. Such a measure protects the walls from likely infiltrations and saves the plumbing and electrical circuitry and connections from getting damaged.
4. If you intend using paper facing, mind that it is highly flammable and should not be left exposed. You should make your basement safer by having a drywall that covers the paper facing and keeps you free from anxiety.
Adopting a wrong posture not only causes an unimpressive personality but may lead to serious complications of health at times. An improper posture is indicated by slumped shoulders or a rounded back. It could cause you pain in the back, neck or shoulders. Once you get used to an unhealthy posture it needs a lot of effort to take corrective measures on your own. It is too difficult to come out of that habit and in most cases, an external aid is needed for correcting the wrong posture.
An accessory to help you regain a healthy posture comes in the form of braces. Of course the idea of improving you posture is heartily welcomed by anyone but bear in mind that use of braces does not offer an instant solution or recovery. Yet, it’s a wonderful aid that keeps reminding you to sit or walk straight. You may realize it is just half the story.
The other half of the story is to follow a routine of exercises that help you to build muscles around the desired area. The two measures have to be adopted simultaneously for getting the right effect in a shorter time frame, enabling you to walk and stand straight and get that imposing personality.
In case you decide to go for a supporting aid in the form of a brace, you have to take care of a couple of things to ensure that you are buying the right material. Here are a few points that would help you in choosing and making an effective use of the right brace.
1. First of all you should realize which part your body most needs a support. If you have slumped shoulders, then look for a suitable supporting system for your shoulders. On the other hand if the problematic area is at your back, or the spinal region ,you have to look for a different kind of a support system to get the best results.
2. When buying a brace you should thoroughly check the straps as that is the part of the brace that makes it affective while adding to your sense of comfort. Thin straps may dig into your skin and certainly are too uncomfortable to use for a prolonged period of time. You should opt for thick supporting straps with some kind of a built in internal padding arrangement that makes it comfortable to carry the brace all the while. If you are unable to procure such a brace, you must use a thin undergarment beneath your brace to prevent it from getting it in direct contact with your skin.
3. Look for braces that make use of fabrics that facilitate ventilation of air thru them. For this purpose spandex and lycra are considered ideal, while it is best to avoid latex. Wearing braces that do not permit a flow of air can be a very torturous experience, more so in hot weather.
4.You should not be stingy while buying braces. It will be worthwhile in the long run to spend some time and look for comparative products and prices. A cheap brace can’t be expected to last longer and may fail to give the required support that you would be looking for.
In case your kitchen is beginning to give a tired look, perhaps it’s time to give a new scenario to this most often used part of the household where you spend a good time and imagination for keeping the family in a hale and hearty state. If you would just ponder for a minute, you’ll surely realize that the most important factor that contributes to impart it that unhealthy look is its cabinetry.
Remodeling of the kitchen is an expensive and time consuming proposition. And, you may not have enough budgets for carrying out all the renovation. Now, even if you are on a tight budget you can give your kitchen that remarkable new look without burning a hole in your pocket, as long as the cabinets are in a good shape.
The kitchen cabinets constitute the most visible part, yet remain the most ill treated component of the kitchen. It’s thus natural for the cabinets to give a sad and tired look which ultimately imparts that dull and tired look to your whole kitchen. You may be surprised but relieved to learn that in most of the cases the structure of the cabinetry is in sound health and requires only a fresh look. Application of colors, stains or wood veneers can instantly make over your old and dull-looking kitchen to a bright vibrant place to work in. It dramatically changes the appearance of the place.
The most economical solution that saves your money and effort too, is to refinish your kitchen cabinets. You may get the desired effect by simply painting it or staining the cabinet doors and cabinetry. Compared to the replacement of the cabinetry and the cabinets, this is the most practical and economical way of giving an altogether new look. Painting or staining is a very simple and cost-effective DIY project in case you can spare the time and have the necessary tools. Else, you have to hire the services of a professional.
Re-facing these cabinets is definitely more expensive than refinishing, yet very economical than replacing those. This is the way it works. You will need to remove and strip-off old cabinet doors and drawers to inspect the same for any damages. Next, you replace the doors and drawers with new ones that could be made from new wood veneer to laminate, depending on you preference and style. The cabinet frames and exterior surfaces are covered or refaced to jell and the interiors of the cabinets are cleaned and painted to complete kitchen cabinet re-facing.
In case no damage has been caused to the kitchen cabinet hardware, this may be cleaned and re-fixed. However, this is the best time to decide a new cabinet hardware for you and get a stylish look for the kitchen that reflects your taste and personality. The time needed for the completion of such a project will naturally depend on the size of your kitchen and may vary fro three to five days. That will render your kitchen in effective and out of bounds while the replacements are being carried out.
A complete replacement of the cabinetry and cabinets is generally out of reach for a majority of the homeowners, though it gives an entirely new and lively looks to your work-area. An almost similar effect may be achieved at a much lower cost by simply re-facing or refinishing your kitchen cabinets.
The latest to enter the scheme of things of an architect or an interior designer are Berber carpets. They are getting popular with these professionals as they fit into a vast variety of designs of homes and offices. But, it’s very intriguing to know that a majority of the patrons of these carpets are not aware how and from where they arrived on the scene. Nor do many know how they derived their name.
These carpets were so named because they were first made by a tribe of the same name from North Africa. This tribe was known for making carpets from a bulky but very well textured type of woolen thread. Fortunately that yarn survives till the day. It is infused with a number of bright colors and strengthened to make it adaptable and dependable. That makes it a good choice of carpeting material. There are quite a few other reasons prompting you to opt for a Berber carpet over another kind of carpets already available in the market.
The most outstanding feature of Berber carpets is that they offer a soft surface that’s comfortable for feet. They inherit this characteristic from the process of making. The yarn used for making of such carpets is speckled and looped back and forth through the backing to get the desired effect. Multicolored yarn is used to make very elaborate and interesting designs that are pleasant to the eyes. The size of the loop can vary. A Berber carpet with large loops results in giving a soft and fuzzy look, whereas smaller loops give a conventional looking carpet that still retains its exotic look for which it is known.
Another helpful feature, again naturally inherited, of these carpets is that they do not support the breeding of harmful bacteria. There are many air pockets, which apart from making them comfortable, provide for a breathable material and act as a kind of insulator. This contributes to sort of having a control on the temperature of the room. That is not the case with other types of carpets that facilitate growing of bacteria because of higher temperature. The best measure to have healthy environments in the room is to keep its humidity at a low level and Berber tiles do not maintain moisture as easily as any other carpet.
The technique employed for making Berber carpets prevents them from getting damaged too easily. The double loops employed in the making of these tiles hold the carpet backing sturdily than conventional carpets with single attachment at the backing. The robustness of the carpet makes it easy to remove stains and it takes much longer before they begin to show signs of wear and tear. Looking to these characteristics, particularly a longer life makes these carpet tiles more economical than other carpet tiles. Considering that these are made from wool that is generally expected to be a more expensive material doesn’t that sound out of place!
Berber carpet tiles will successfully provide you years of service if you treat them with respect. You must be careful while cleaning them and ensure that you don’t happen to snag any yarn, else it will get tattered. As the whole carpet is connected together, unraveling of any part may lead to the collapse of the whole tile. Anther precaution you should take is to use light force while vacuuming it.
Perhaps what makes it al the more favorite of designers is the availability in a vast variety of colors that facilitates their being used almost anywhere to add beauty to the floor. You can have them in pastel shades, earthen tones or standard dyes. That gives a great flexibility to any designer. Any carper for that matter can be used to cover the irregularities of the floor but Berber carpets have a built in characteristic of better concealing irregularities like bumps or warps in wood.
Easy maintenance and good looks have prompted many householders to go in for concrete driveways. Broom finish is very acceptable but others do go for a more expensive looking exposed aggregate.
It’s the quality of concrete that determines the final outlook and quality of floor. The concrete should have entrapped air. These air bubbles of microscopic size remain embedded in the concrete even after it has been cured. The expansion or contraction of concrete as a consequence of changed climatic conditions is absorbed by these bubbles, thus keeping the concrete free of scaling. Water on entering bricks, concrete or natural stone causes the surface to peel off or pop out. This phenomenon is known as spalling.
Spalling and Scaling Causes
Spalling and scaling points to a deterioration of any concrete surface. The top layer gives way and it peels of in the form of flakes .This causes the stone aggregate to get exposed to outside atmospheric conditions and it worsens with time. As the top layer flakes off, very minute pits are formed. The overall effect is to weaken the concrete. There could be other causes of damages but they all point out to the use of improper concrete. The concrete might have lacked cement content or it had more than required volume of water or insufficient volume of air. The excess of water on getting frozen in winters is expanded. This expansion of trapped water could lead to cracking of top surface of the concrete.
De-icing Salts and Deteriorating Concrete
De-icing salts are added to melt snow and ice. Water formed as a consequence of melting may enter concrete. When the temperature falls below the specified working temperature of de-icing compounds, water will naturally get frozen. The damage is not caused by the salt itself but by expansion caused as a result of frozen water.
As salts melt snow and ice, water enters the concrete. The de-icing salts are responsible for corroding the steel reinforcement that is used in concrete driveways. This causes a further weakness of the concrete used in the driveway.
Penetrating Siloxane Sealers to Protect Concrete Driveways
A visual inspection of the driveway can not confirm if the driveway is good enough to withstand expansion of frozen water. To be safe, you should use a penetrating compound, and those containing silanes and siloxanes are among the best. These break through the surface of the concrete and form a chemical bonding with it. The pores get filled and prevent water from entering the concrete. Further, the concrete can breathe and thus release any trapped water vapor inside it. Water vapors may also travel up from beneath the concrete and in the absence of an escape-route; it remains trapped and on freezing causes spalling and scaling.
Epoxies and acrylics should be avoided as they do not allow the water vapor to escape. The sealers provide fencing to water. They remain invisible and do not color, darken or change the texture of the concrete. If you choose the right sealer and follow the rules when sealing, you will get a long lasting and great looking surface.
The hot tub covers that come with hot tubs with the initial purchase tend to be of lower quality than custom hot tub covers. In order to ensure that you protect your spa to the fullest extent, you may want to consider purchasing a high quality hot tub cover.
If you already have a high quality cover, then you just want to make sure that it fits well and forms a perfect seal.
The quality of the seal on hot tub covers is very important because it determines how well the temperature on your spa will be controlled and how well you will keep things out that you don’t want to get in.
The investment in high quality hot tub covers is minimal when you consider how much money it will save you in the long run on your larger investment in your hot tub. A better hot tub cover will preserve more heat and will protect your hot tub more effectively than the lower quality cover that comes with your spa.
The R-value of hot tub covers is the measurement used to express how well a cover retains the flow of heat. The main factor that affects this measurement is the thickness of the cover. The higher the R-value, the better the cover insulates the hot tub.
An R-value of 15 is considered good enough to protect your hot tub and keep it at the proper temperature. Anything higher is not really distinguishable from the quality of an R-value 15.
The better hot tub covers retain heat, the better your hot tub will function, the more enjoyable it will be for you, and the more money you will save.
The ultimate goal is to keep the water inside the hot tub warm and to keep everything else out of the tub.
A better insulated spa cover offers more protection and heat maintenance. In addition to these positives, you want to remember that a good hot tub cover will be mildew-resistant. This is another thing to keep in mind because you don’t want to have a smelly or moldy cover.
Everyone is trying to tell us how aging is a natural process and how we are supposed to age gracefully, but the truth is that no one wants wrinkles the size of Cansas on their face. All right, we are not made to live forever, but we have the right to live our lives with as much decency and beauty as todays cosmetic technology can give us.
Our face, especially the eyes, and our neck, are the most sensitive areas of our skin, and they are therefore the first areas where our age shows. The good side is that we have discovered how to lessen the signs of aging and to prevent further damage of the skin. The bad thing is that these days there are so many different products on the market and not all of them suit our skintype.
Thus, we are left with so many chances to help our skin and, at the same time, with so many good and bad choices that it seems like we’ll never find the right anti wrinkle face cream. Wrong!
You know what your skin needs and you are able to choose an appropriate anti aging cream. The first thing your face skin needs to have is moisture and protection from sun rays, so look for something to block the ultraviolet rays of the sun, with a sun-protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Next, you need moisturizers in order to protect your face from wind, extremes of temperature, and pollutants, and to keep the elasticity. Also, anti-inflammatories are a must, to prevent redness, scarring, and other inflammation that may occur.
Almost every anti wrinkle face cream has antioxidants and that’s good, you need it to remove the free radicals which cause much damage to our bodies and to our health. Minerals and vitamins A, C and E are effective anti wrinkle products as well. To help your skin from the inside, remind yourself that eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is as much important as the anti wrinkle cream for the overall look of your face and your entire body skin.
Try to keep away from synthetic ingredients that are applied to the skin, and stay away from the sun’s ultraviolet rays as much as possible because they hasten the wrinkling process. Try not to wash your face with tap water more than once a day because it also dries the skin.
When you apply your anti wrinkle cream, treat your face with a gentle massage, and don’t forget to pay attention to your neck as well. Soft massaging will increase blood circulation, relax tense facial muscles, and help the skin absorb the the cream evenly.
There are plenty of things that you can do for the look and well being of your face and since it is going to be with for the rest of your life, cherish it, take care of it, as you would of your best friend. It all does sound like a lot of work, but keep in mind that your face is something that is always on display and treating it with patience and care will surely pay off.
Pest plants need to be controlled to reduce their affect on the environment. When introduced to a new environment, any plant has the potential to become a pest. Gorse, Blackberry, Lantana and Woolly Nightshade are examples of plants that were introduced as ornamentals or heging plants but have become pests and the focus of large control programmes in New Zealand. All are major pests of the environment and can affect native bush as well as farmland.
Problems with plants are numerous. Some are incredibly quick growing and invasive like Wandering Jew and Woolly Nightshade. Some plants are difficult to control once they have established due to large seed banks in the soil like gorse. Some affect land use by establishing in pastures and excluding stock and humans by forming large prickly thickets, which is what gorse and blackberry do. Some are toxic to stock like ragwort. Some choke waterways and affect water quality like water hyacinth. All of these plants have been introduced to New Zealand and found the ideal climate to thrive and cause problems in agriculture, horticulture or conservation land.
Both manual and chemical methods can be used to control pest plants. These methods can be used on an individual basis or on mass. The most labour intensive but possibly most effective method is to pull out individual plants ensuring the removal of all the root system. Control of large plants tends to be by stump cutting, direct drilling or scarfing the tree first, then using chemicals to poison the tree and stop any further growth from the tree or stump. For large areas of pest plants they can sometimes be controlled by spraying and then slashing after the plant has died.
Plant Biosecurity is partly about preventing the spread both locally and nationally of pest plants. This is important within areas of high conservation importance. There are different levels of significance for pest plants. Some are listed as controlled with enforced actions. In New Zealand this is mainly looked after by the Regional and Local councils that create pest management strategies to give direction in how to control pest plants. Those of national significance are listed on the National Pest Plant Accord which is administered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Gorse is the source of several problems in the environment. The main problem is the mainly adverse affect the plant has on farm pasture. On a positive note the root system of the gorse plant does fix nitrogen which eventually is released back in to the soil and this is beneficial. It is quick growing and due to its spiny nature, it forms thickets that are impenetrable to stock and humans. It produces large numbers of seeds in seed pods which explode open, enhancing seed distribution. Seed may last 100 years in the soil before conditions become suitable for germination. Burning stimulates regrowth.
Blackberry is a very prickly, rambling vine. The problem with blackberry is that it has an extensive rhizome system which can be difficult to get rid of. While the top part of the plant may be removed, the problem still exists if the rhizomes are left in the ground. Dense thickets of blackberry of up to 2 metres tall can prevent stock and human access as well as providing refuges for other pests like possums and rabbits.
Woolly Nightshade is a highly invasive quick growing plant that can reach in excess of 5 metres tall. The trees form dense stands that prevent the growth of other plants in the area. They fruit prolifically and birds spread the seed very effectively and efficiently over large distances. It can quickly take over areas of forest margin, scrub, farm land, hill country, waterway margins and reserves if it is not controlled. The plant is thought to be toxic to stock and can affect humans.
